Mi, 11.02.2009Kino | The InternationalSexy citiesIf you love architecture, you'll love this film. Some splendid modern buildings provide the backdrop for what's otherwise a mediocre story line, where nobody wins, nothing changes, and everybody gets killed.
The acting is flat, the main characters never develop, and secondary characters pop in and out of the action without any explanation - and if the main characters are flat and undeveloped, then the supporting roles are unidimensional and, well, like a blank roll of film that's been pulled out if it's canister before it was ever shot: nothing there in the first place, so who cares if they get riddled with bullets?
Speaking of bullets... The best piece of acting is the screaming japanese tourist in the shoot out at the New York Guggenheim Museum. That I believed. Give the Gal a Grammy! Best Supporting Screamer. Now, speaking of the Big G, when I was seven my grandma took me to that museum, and along with Saarinen's TWA terminal at JFK, it shaped my life (no prizes for guessing what I do during daylight!). So it is a testimony to this Film's mediocrity that they could riddle the interior of Frankie's Meisterwerk with bullets till it resembled a snail made of Swiss Cheese, and i didn't so much as flinch. The scene does make for an attractive poster, i'll give it that.
Having said all that, it was fun flitting from city to city: Berlin, Milan, Paris, New York, and Istanbul.
So, a weak story with a feeble plot, characters straight out of a video game (Doom is about right - remember?), and some bloody good buildings to look at if you get bored.
2/10 for acting
4/10 for action
3/10 for storyline
10/10 for good ol' Franky 'cos the Big G in the Big Apple still rocks my world! |
